What to do when it snows!

With winter comes snow.  But before it flies, here is some important information to help you make it through the season:

City Streets

  • Primary and secondary roads are salted and sanded first, followed by residential streets
  • Snowplows are dispatched on primary and secondary routes when accumulation reaches 50 mm or 2".  When plowing on these roadways has been completed and if continued snow accumulation reaches 75 mm or 3", snowplows are dispatched to residential streets
  • The city aims to have all roads plowed within 24 hours after the snow has stopped falling
  • When clearing your driveway, try to pile the snow on the right side to avoid windrows - the snow that is pushed back onto your driveway when a snowplow passes.  Note:  Standing in your driveway looking towards the street determines the right side.

City Sidewalks

  • The city is responsible for clearing all sidewalks but please clear yours if you are able to.
  • Salting and/or sanding is done only on sidewalks on primary and secondary roads, when extremely slippery conditions exist.

For questions regarding winter control operations, contact the roads and parks maintenance department at 905-333-6166 or by e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .  Please wait 24 hours after the snow has stopped falling before calling to let us know if your street has not been plowed.

In Burlington roads and sidewalks are plowed in a priority order.

Primary Roads

  1. Secondary Roads
  2. Residential Roads

The city's first priority is keeping the main roads clear.  Residential roads are plowed after primary and secondary roads are clear.  During severe and continuous snowfall it is often necessary to redeploy snowplows from residential areas back to the main roadways.  During severe and continuous snowstorms it will take the city longer than usual to complete residential roads.

Important:  Please remember that during and after a snowfall vehicles cannot be parked on city streets.  All vehicles must be removed from on city streets to keep road lanes clear and safe for travel, garbage and recycling pickup, and other vehicles.  Failure to remove your vehicle during or after a snowfall can result in a $50 fine.

LaSalle Park Dr. to Waterdown Rd.

King Road

Brant St. to Number 1 Side road.

Guelph Line to Dundas St.

Walkers Line to Dundas St.

Burloak Dr. to Upper Middle
